What trust score measures
Exchanges are ranked by a trust score that combines several signals rather than by volume alone. It considers order book depth — whether large orders can be filled without moving the price — how plausible reported volume is against observable activity, the exchange's regulatory standing, and whether it publishes evidence of its reserves. The intent is to distinguish real trading activity from figures that cannot be corroborated.
Why volume alone is a poor ranking
Reported volume is self-declared and has historically been inflated, sometimes dramatically. Wash trading, where an exchange or its participants trade with themselves, produces impressive figures at little cost and was widespread enough that independent studies concluded a large share of reported crypto volume was not genuine. An exchange claiming enormous volume with a thin order book is a warning sign, not a recommendation.
What to consider when choosing
Beyond the ranking: whether the exchange operates legally where you live, which assets and fiat currencies it supports, the full fee structure including withdrawal fees, and what it publishes about how customer assets are held. Proof-of-reserves attestations vary widely in rigour — some cover assets without covering liabilities, which tells you much less than it appears to.
Custody is the underlying risk
Assets on an exchange are held by that exchange. If it fails, is hacked, or freezes withdrawals, those assets may not be recoverable, and several large exchanges have failed with customer funds. This is the reason for the long-standing advice to hold long-term assets in a wallet you control rather than on an exchange.
